A few months ago we reviewed several models of the iRobot Roomba vacuum. We even went as far as to put it head to head with our Dyson DC7. Well, iRobot has done it again with their new iRobot Roomba 500 model. This new model has several enhancements over previous models and a few bells and whistles.

The new Roomba 500 has improved cleaning performance and an enhanced suction for deeper cleaning. This little robot now picks up more dirt, requires less cleaning and is much easier to maintain. Additionally, there is a 34% larger filtration system, and a larger dust bin, something that was lacking in previous models.

The new navigation system still has virtual wall technology, but is improved. Also updated are the bumpers thaty now are softtouch providing reduced impact on furniture and other obstacles. The Roomba 500 also has new anti-tangle technology to keep it from being tangled on cords, rug fringe and tassels.

The Roomba 500 now even sounds like a robot, New Voice Demonstration provides an audio walk-thru on setup and demonstration. It also alerts you when it’s time for maintenance.

The Roomba Robot vacuum is a revolution in vacuum cleaning. Made by the iRobot corporation, this little machine does much more then it’s size would indicate. All you have to do it place it in the center of the room, press the “on” button, and watch it go.The following are just a few of the advantages of owing a Roomba:

It does the work for you: This is self explanatory. Why would anybody want to work when a machine can do it for you?

No supervision required: There are built in sensors that will allow it to navigate around the room. It will travel in random directions until the carpet is clean.

Schedule cleanings: You can schedule it to run anytime you want, day or night. Many times people program it to run during the day while they are at work. It’s such a nice feeling to come home after a long work day to a nice clean house!

Cleans under furniture: Since it’s only 3 inches high, there’s no problem with it reaching under most furniture. The same can’t be said for most upright vacuum cleaners.

It cleans the floor 4 times: It may seem redundant, but it actually re-traces its steps. This way you’ll be insured to have a clean carpet every time you use it.

It will snuff out the dirt: The sensors will locate and concentrate on the dirtier areas of the room.

Edging is easy: The Roomba has external brushes that will clean right up to the wall.

Size does matter: At 3″ by 14″ it’s much smaller than most vacuums. Therefore storing it is a breeze.

RE-charging it is easy: After it’s finished, it will automatically go back to its base for recharging. There’s nothing to remember.

These are just a few advantages for owing a Roomba. But don’t take our word for it. Try one for yourself. Who knows? Maybe you’ll never vacuum another floor again!

We were also skeptical on how well a small robotic vacuum could clean our house. We put ours to the test and were surprised. Not did this small vacuum perform well, it did a clean-up job.We started with a few tests. A few dry coffee grounds on the floor, some paper, a few pieces of dirt under the table. Of course this would be no challenge for our seasoned vacuum jockey that usually totes around a Dyson Animal, but how would the iRobot fair?

We turned on the iRobot Roomba 4230 after charging for a few hours and let her go to work. This small robotic vacuum quickly whipped around the floor bumping into furniture and redirected itself. It looked a bit chaotic at first.Then suddenly there was a change in the pattern. Much like a dog on a walk in the park, stopping and sniffing everything, the iRobot Roomba stopped cold in it’s tracks, made a few circles and being cleaning of the coffee gounds it just found. Truly amazing!

We all stood and watched this little machine whip about the floor and stop short as it reach the virtual walls that we had setup. The Roomba 4230 comes with Virtual Walls that allows you to contrain the Roomba from going into other rooms or in unwanted areas. (These can be purchased seperately as well). 

After the vacuum had completed it’s task it found it’s way back to it’s docking station and began charging. The great thing about the scheduler is that you can program it to vacuum while your at work, sleeping, watching TV. You name it. This little vacuum can save you time. We’ve found that the secret to this little vacuum’s success it having it run each day or at least every other day. This help clean the light dirt and keep your carpet’s looking great. 

This little vacuum will never replace our vacuum jockey’s thirst for the power of the Dyson Animal, but it’s a great little worker bee that will help the rest of us.
